The How-To’s of Saving Energy Bills

Your family may be looking for ways to save money and become more frugal, and if that’s the case, then you are in luck. One of the areas where most families fail to save adequately is in the area of their energy bills. Sure, most families turn off lights when they leave the room and do other basic things, but are you really doing all you can. Maybe these tips on how to cut on your energy bills will show how you are doing, and where you can improve.

One of the biggest ways energy gets wasted is in the heating and cooling of a house. There are definitely ways that you can tighten your belt and pull up your socks in this area. For instance, if you have a fireplace, you probably need to make sure the heat from it is being used most efficiently. By choking your chimney a bit you can make it heat the rooms of your house more, and allow you to spend less on heating. You can also see if there are any air leaks in your house which might be allowing the hot or cool air escape from your rooms. Make sure your air conditioning is in good condition and running as efficiently as possible, and that can save you a surprising amount of money.

Think about your basement and attic as well, and see if they are part of your energy problem. Sometimes those two area will be extremely wasteful, a veritable vacuum of all your heating or cooling. Try to insulate them so that the atmosphere in your house isn’t escaping through there either.

You see so much hype about “green” appliances, or fridges and blenders that are supposedly good for the environment. This is actually true in many cases, and using one of these instead of the regular ones can help you to cut down your bills. A green fridge might use at least 30 percent less energy than a regular one, and much more than an old one. Change out your appliances and benefit from helping the environment.

You will definitely benefit from taking shorter showers in a dual way: from lower heating and water bills. Cut back on the amount of water you use, especially hot water, and you make a difference in more than one way. You may want to change out your faucets for more water efficient ones, or change your heater for a more “green” and modern one.

There are so many things, both big and small, that you can do to cut back on energy expenditure in your house. Look for ways to do this every day, and you will be amazed at all the things you find to do to save energy.
